Wayne Gretzky is a former Canadian professional ice hockey player.

Gretzky, nicknamed "The Great One" played for the Edmonton Oilers, LA Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers from 1979-1999. Gretzky’s ability to read the game is unrivaled. To this day, he is still the league's leading scorer with more goals and assists than any other player. He is arguably the most well-known athlete in history, and he currently holds 60 NHL records.

Gretzky was born in Brantford, Ontario where his father Walter made an ice rink in their backyard every winter. Walter’s teaching had such an impact on Wayne’s success that he fondly nicknamed his talent and hardwork as “Wally-given” instead of God-given. By the time Wayne was 13 years old, he had already scored over 1,000 points. He ended his minor league career with a 378-goal season. During that time, Wayne’s Gordie-Howe-inspired number ‘9’ was taken by another player. On the advice of his coach, he started wearing his now iconic ‘99’.

At just 17 years old, Wayne signed with the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA. His time with the franchise was short as they folded after just 25 games. At this crossroads, Gretzky’s contract was sold to the Edmonton Oilers. The move would prove to be historic as Wayne and his Edmonton teammates went on to break countless scoring records and win 4 Stanley Cups, setting a precedence of dominance that may never be repeated.

In 1988, the Edmonton Oiler’s owner traded Gretzky to the LA Kings. Gretzky found a period of success with the LA Kings that had never been seen in a southern US hockey market. To end his time with the Kings, Gretzky brought his 1993 team to the Stanley Cup Finals.

After a brief stint with the St. Louis Blues, Wayne went on to finish his career with the New York Rangers. Upon his retirement, Wayne was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and he became the only player in history to have his number retired league-wide. Gretzky has always stayed close to the world of hockey through various endeavours.
